TWO INGREDIENTS. DIFFERENT ROLES.

Understanding HEMA & TPO in nail gels.

Learn how each ingredient works, why it is used and what to consider when choosing a formula for your brand.

HEMA

A reactive building block

2-Hydroxyethyl methacrylate is a monomer used in nail systems. It can contribute to adhesion and the cured polymer network.

The key concern: skin sensitisation. Uncured product should not touch skin.

TPO

A light-activated initiator

Trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide helps start curing under the appropriate light, activating the reaction that hardens the gel.

The EU prohibition follows its classification as toxic to reproduction, category 1B.

01 / ESTABLISHED SYSTEMS

Conventional formulas

Established HEMA/TPO-containing options for destinations and uses where the selected formula is permitted.

  • Cost-conscious formulation options
  • Mature development and production experience
  • Performance-led choices for adhesion, application and finish
Not for new EU or Great Britain TPO-containing launches.
02 / INGREDIENT EXCLUSION

HEMA & TPO-free formulas

Options developed without these two ingredients, for brands with specific exclusion requirements and market plans.

  • Supports HEMA- and TPO-exclusion briefs
  • A starting point for TPO-restricted markets
  • Match viscosity, color, curing and packaging through samples
Free-from does not mean allergy-free or automatically compliant.

Price and performance depend on the actual formula, shade and order. Confirm the full ingredient list, claim evidence and final product assessment before launch.

MARKET CHECK · REVIEWED 9 SEPTEMBER 2026

Where do the restrictions apply?

A selected-market overview, not a worldwide clearance. Review the complete formula for every destination.

EUROPEAN UNION

TPO prohibited

Since 1 September 2025, TPO-containing cosmetics cannot be sold, supplied or used on clients in the EU, including existing stock. HEMA and Di-HEMA nail products are restricted to professional use with required warnings.

GREAT BRITAIN

New-market deadline passed

No new placing on the market of TPO-containing cosmetics from 15 August 2026. Qualifying products placed earlier may be made available until the end of 14 February 2027. HEMA nail products are professional-use only.

NORTHERN IRELAND

EU cosmetics framework

Northern Ireland follows the EU cosmetics rules under the Windsor Framework, not the Great Britain transition dates.

UNITED STATES & OTHER DESTINATIONS

Check locally before ordering

Do not carry EU conclusions over to another market. In the US, most cosmetics do not have premarket FDA approval; safety and compliant labelling remain business responsibilities. Other national and local restrictions still need review.

COMPLIANCE IS MORE THAN TWO INGREDIENTS

Build the evidence
around your product.

Start with your selling country and intended users. We can then discuss the selected formula and the supporting information your assessment needs.

  1. Formula & ingredient reviewConfirm the exact INCI, restrictions and exclusion requirements.
  2. Samples & product assessmentCheck performance, curing instructions and relevant test needs.
  3. Label & market documentationCoordinate required warnings and the relevant safety and notification process with your responsible party.

MSDS / SDS: practical product safety informationWe can provide MSDS/SDS documents for most of our products, subject to the selected formula. These explain hazards, safe handling, storage and emergency measures—useful information for your team and supply partners.

CPNP: notification for your branded productFor an EU launch, the Responsible Person must arrange CPNP notification for the product sold under your brand, with its corresponding product details. A supplier’s notification for another branded product does not cover yours. We can discuss the product information available to support your process.

BEFORE YOU CHOOSE

Clear answers to common questions.

Is HEMA & TPO-free suitable for everyone with sensitive skin?

No. Removing these ingredients does not remove all potential allergens. People with a previous nail-product reaction should seek medical advice rather than assume an alternative gel is safe.

Is HEMA banned in the EU?

Not outright in nail products: HEMA and Di-HEMA Trimethylhexyl Dicarbamate are restricted to professional use and require allergy warnings. TPO has a separate prohibition.

Can a free-from formula still perform well?

Performance is a property of the full formulation and curing system. Compare samples for adhesion, viscosity, finish and removal; an ingredient claim alone cannot predict the result.

Can I use your CPNP for my own brand?

A notification for a different branded product cannot simply be reused for yours. Your EU Responsible Person needs to arrange notification with the correct brand and product information. CPNP is a notification, not an approval or certificate. Contact us to discuss the information available for your selected products.

Can you provide an MSDS for my products?

MSDS/SDS documents are available for most of our products. Share your product selection so we can confirm the appropriate document for the formula. It supports safe handling and storage, but does not replace the finished cosmetic product safety assessment.

Does this page certify my finished product?

No. This is general ingredient and market information. Your finished formula, packaging, claims and destination requirements need their own review before sale.
